Readers are likely aware that there are many things that could cause a motor vehicle accident to occur. Distracted driving is one of the things that is sometimes blamed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, close to 20 percent of the crashes that occurred in 2008 were a result of distracted driving. Approximately 6,000 individual died in those incidents. But just what does that term actually mean? In this post we will cover some of the activities that fall under that umbrella.

It is possible to break distracted driving into three main types: visual, manual and cognitive. Behaviors that result in the driver taking his or her eyes off the road are considered visual distraction. Those that involve the driver removing his or her hands from the steering wheel are manual distractions. A driver may be engaging in distracted driving without doing either of those things if he or she allows his or her mind to wander.

The following are examples of distracted driving behaviors that could lead to crashes occurring:

  • Texting while driving
  • Multi tasking
  • Answering cell phone calls
  • Reading maps
  • Loud music
  • Negative emotional stress

Regardless of the type of distraction, if it leads to an injury inducing accident, those who are hurt may be able to pursue financial compensation via a personal injury lawsuit. To be successful in a lawsuit of this nature the injured party must show that negligence on the part of another person was to blame for the crash occurring. For the best chance of succeeding in such a case it is generally a good idea to seek assistance from a lawyer.
