Motorcyclists and motorists must help keep motorcyclists safe

On behalf of Restovich Braun & Associates posted in motorcycle accidents on Thursday, September 10, 2015.

All motorists who are on the roadways with motorcycles have a duty to be motorcycle aware. This can help motorcyclists to stay safe while they are enjoying the fresh air. Even though other motorists should watch for motorcyclists and most motorcyclists operate their bikes in a safe manner, it is still vital for motorcyclists to take proper safety precautions while they are on the road.

There are several laws in Minnesota that aim to keep motorcyclists safe on the roadways. For example, all motorcycle operators in the state must wear eye protection. A windshield on the motorcycle doesn't meet this requirement.

Another safety issue that motorcyclists in Minnesota might consider is helmet use. Any motorcycle operator who is under 18 years old must wear a DOT-approved helmet. Anyone who has only a motorcycle instruction permit must also wear a helmet. Other operators should also consider wearing a helmet because you are three times as likely to suffer a brain injury if you are in an accident and don't have a helmet on as you are if you are wearing a helmet.

All motorcycles must have the headlight on at all times when the motorcycle is in use. A rear-view mirror, at least one brake, a red or yellow tail light with a stop lamp and a horn are required for all motorcycles that are street legal in Minnesota.

If you are involved in a motorcycle accident and suffer from an injury, you might choose to seek compensation from the driver who caused the accident. Understanding the process might help you decide if you want to pursue compensation.
