National Teen Driver Safety Week tips for parents of teen drivers

On behalf of Restovich Braun & Associates posted in car accidents on Thursday, October 22, 2015. October 18 to 24 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. This is the perfect opportunity for parents and guardians to discuss some driving safety tips with teens who are driving and those who are going to start driving soon. This is vital to ensure that the teen drivers aren't driving in an unsafe manner.

The campaign this year is the 5 to Drive campaign. It is meant to address the five most deadly and dangerous things that teens do when they drive. These five behaviors are:

  • Drinking alcohol before driving
  • Using a cellphone to make calls or text
  • Failing to use a seat belt
  • Driving at unsafe speeds
  • Driving with too many passengers

When parents are discussing these points with teen drivers, they can use the five points to remind teens that these activities aren't ever acceptable. It also opens the door for talking about other safe driving tips.

According to a survey, only 25 percent of parents had a serious discussion with teens about safe driving. That is astonishing, especially when you consider that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the country for people who are 15 to 20 years old.

Parents who discuss safe driving tips with teens aren't only keeping the teen safe. They are also working to keep other drivers and passengers on the roadways safe. Preventing an accident or a tragedy before it occurs is a better option than having to deal with the effects of an accident with a teen driver.

Sadly, there will still be accidents caused by teen drivers. In those cases, the victims of the accidents might opt to seek compensation for the damages that occur.
