How can motorcycle riders stay safer during group rides?

Group motorcycle rides are something that many motorcycle riders enjoy. These rides, whether they are for a charity event or just a group of friends riding together, pose some unique risks to the riders. Making sure that you understand some basic safety protocols can help to ensure that you make it back home without having an accident.

What formation should we use for the ride?

Ideally, your group will ride in a staggered formation so that the there are two lines of riders per lane. The riders from the two lines shouldn’t ever ride shoulder-to-shoulder or front-wheel-to-back-wheel. Instead, there should be a 1-second space between the rear tire of a rider on one side and the front tire of the rider on the other side. This makes the formation appear almost like the teeth on a zipper.

What should we have with us when we go on our ride?

All riders should arrive at the starting point with a full tank of gas. At least one rider in the group should have a first aid kit. Someone also needs to have a set of tools. All riders should have a cell phone so they can make emergency calls or contact someone in the group if they get separated.

Even the most experienced rider might still be involved in an accident during the group ride. A vehicle might crash into the group or a road hazard might cause one or more riders to wreck. In that case, proper evasive measures from the other riders can help to minimize the devastation. If a motorcycle rider is injured in a group ride, seeking compensation is possible.
