Distracted driving in Minnesota can lead to accidents

On behalf of Restovich Braun & Associates posted in car accidents on Friday, April 15, 2016.

One in every four crashes that occur in Minnesota are caused at least in part by inattentive or distracted driving. Those crashes lead to at least 350 serious injuries and at least 70 deaths each year. Those facts show just how serious it is when drivers aren't giving their full attention to driving.

There are several ways that drivers can ensure they aren't distracted or inattentive. One of the primary ways is to keep their hands and attention off of cellphones. Drivers who choose to talk or text on the phone are putting themselves and everyone else at risk when they are driving. Keeping phones turned off or moving them out of reach can help to keep drivers off the phone. Also, remember that texting, accessing the Internet, emailing or using a cellphone is illegal for drivers in Minnesota. This includes while the vehicle is in motion, but also while the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or stopped in traffic.

Having children and other passengers in the vehicle can also be a source of distraction, but they can also be a help. Others in the vehicle can handle phone calls and texts if they are old enough. They can also change radio stations, climate control settings and navigation options. On the other hand, these same people can be distracting if they are acting out or talking too much.

For those who are involved in accidents because of distracted driving, the reason for the distraction isn't really important. Those who are injured might choose to seek compensation from the distracted driver.
