There are multiple reasons why drunk driving accidents occur each day throughout the state of Minnesota. Sometimes weather plays are role. Other times vehicle defects are to blame. In still other situations the actions of a driver play at least a small role in the crash occurring.
Here again, there are a wide range of activities that a driver might engage in that could lead to a motor vehicle accident occurring. While distracted driving often is to blame in this situation, drunk driving could also result in a crash occurring.
A DWI taskforce recently made a pitch to lawmakers in the state of Minnesota to beef up the penalties those who are convicted of the crime face. The task force’s suggestions include:
Lowering the blood alcohol concentration at which the stronger penalties are applied.
Seizing the license plates of those convicted of drunk driving.
Installing interlock devices that require the person driving the car first take a breath test with a resulting blood alcohol content that is lower than the legal limit before the car will start.
Whether lawmakers will act on any of these recommendations remains to be seen. In the meantime, individuals throughout the state will likely continue to drive while intoxicated. It is possible that some of those individuals could cause a car accident to occur. While not all collisions of this nature result in serious injuries, some do. The victims in those cases may not be aware that they have the option of filing a personal injury lawsuit against the drunk drivers responsible for the injury inducing crash. Because there is a time frame in which such a claim must be filed it is important to take action in a timely manner.
