Biography

Dan was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. After graduating from Washburn High School, Dan attend the University of Minnesota - Duluth, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. While in college, Dan sought out a clerkship with the St. Louis County Attorney's Office, gaining his first exposure to the courtroom.

After graduating from UMD, Dan enrolled at Hamline University School of Law. While in law school he also pursued a joint Master's Degree in Business Administration degree at the University of St. Thomas Opus School of Business. During law school Dan served as a law clerk in the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, gaining practical and courtroom experience in its violent crime, juvenile and civil units.

After graduating from law school with honors and passing the Minnesota Bar Exam, Dan began his legal career in southern Minnesota in 2001 with the Steele County Attorney's Office. Beginning as an assistant county attorney, Dan was able to quickly gain a reputation as a skilled and determined litigator, trying dozens of cases involving all degrees of murder, all degrees of criminal sexual conduct, all degrees of assault, weapons offenses, drug offenses, DWI and domestic abuse cases. In addition, Dan has been able to try a variety of civil matters involving child protection, adoption, civil commitments, and licensing appeals.

In 2010, Dan was elected as the Steele County Attorney and in addition to a busy criminal caseload he also served as general legal counsel to the County Board and the various county departments. In this capacity, he handled a wide variety of matters involving contract negotiations, personnel investigations, general litigation, zoning matters, data practices, appeals, real and personal property dispositions, and other legal and risk management counsel as needed. Dan has served on statewide boards and committees focused on criminal justice policy, ethics, and treatment courts. Dan also has extensive experience advising and training local, regional and state law enforcement agencies in areas such as violent crime investigations, trial procedure and accident reconstructions.

Dan has also served on the boards of numerous organizations including the Owatonna Hospital (President, Vice-President and Ethics Committee), United Way of Steele County (President and Vice President) and youth sports associations.

Dan serves clients through by leveraging his courtroom and negotiation experience, tireless commitment to preparation and research, building relationships, and honest communication.
