Car seat use reduces child's risk of severe injury in car crash

On behalf of Restovich Braun & Associates posted in car accidents on Friday, April 10, 2015.

Car accidents are an unfortunate side effect of our nation's reliance upon motor vehicles to get around. When they occur vehicle occupants of all ages can be seriously hurt. To try to minimize the severity of the injuries that might occur, there are things that drivers and passengers can do such as wear the proper safety restraints. For young children that entails the use of a car seat.

As it turns out, just having a seat is not enough. They must be installed properly. Even a minor deviance from the manufacturer's instructions can have an impact on just how serious the injuries suffered by a child are.

This is something that everyone who has children should think is important. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, between 2009 and 2013, a total of 10 kids between the ages of four and seven died after being involved in car accidents. Of that number, seven were not restrained correctly at the time of the collision. A crime prevention specialist with the Anoka County Sherriff's Office indicates that for children between the ages of four and sixteen, motor vehicle crashes are the number one reason that kids accidentally die.

To assist individuals in installing car seats properly, organizations throughout the state of Minnesota set up clinics where technicians not only determine if the right car seat is being used for the age and weight of the child, but check to make sure it is installed properly as well. For those in need of car seats they are sometimes available.

If a child is hurt in a car crash it is possible that his or her parents could pursue compensation for the injuries. This is accomplished via a personal injury lawsuit.
